Main fungi in agriculture

Setbacks in the field

Our fields can suffer many setbacks. Today we are going to talk about one in particular: diseases caused by fungi.

In agriculture it is important to take care of every detail and make sure that our crops are perfect, otherwise we could suffer great losses.

As for fungi, they are usually microscopic and difficult to detect until they are widespread, and this can cause crop losses, reduction of plant life and large losses in general.

Fungal diseases

Each disease produces certain symptoms in the plant that can help us to detect what it is so that we can correct it in time and thus avoid great losses.

Today we are going to talk about some of these diseases:

Gray mold or bract spotting: this disease is caused by the fungus Botrytis cinerea Pers. It is characterized by affecting a wide variety of plants and causing damage at different stages of development. The characteristics of this fungus are: gray mycelium with abundant spores. These can enter directly into the plant without the need for any wound. If it appears, we must make sure to eliminate it well because it can remain for a long time in the soil. It can remain in the soil for a long time.

Smallpox: caused by the fungus Ramularia cynarae. This disease can be detected when on both sides of the foliage we observe irregular circular spots with a gray center and the edges of a more purplish tone. The spots are initially small but can measure up to 20 mm. If we have a very severe case, the leaf may turn brown and fall off.

Powdery mildew: caused by two agents (Leveillula taurica anamorgo Oidiopsis taurica and Golovinomyces cichoracearum). To know if it is powdery mildew we locate whitish mycelium on stems, bracts or both. In addition, small brown lesions are seen on the basal leaves. When the disease progresses, leaf necrosis and orange to brown fruiting bodies can be observed on the leaves.

Verticillium dahliae: caused by the fungus Verticillium dahliae. We will know that it is this disease because we will see how our plants are withering, from the. Basal leaves until the whole plant wilts. If our plants are small or are still in seedlings this disease can kill them. Another common symptom is chlorosis or yellowing of the leaves, tissue death and defoliation.
